MD Finance’s latest NPL Management Market report examines the business of debt purchasing and servicing, combining an international market overview with financial comparisons of selected companies in Romania, the Czech Republic and Spain.

Large NPL balances provide a potential base for debt purchasing and servicing. The commercial opportunity depends on which portfolios reach the market and their recovery economics.

In 2025, estimated average purchase prices for unsecured retail portfolios were approximately 9% of nominal value in Spain and 44% in Romania. Supply increased in Poland and Romania while declining in Italy and Spain.

International groups are also reshaping their presence through selective expansion and exits. Ownership links between lenders and debt managers extend across loan origination and recovery.

Together, these findings show why market selection requires analysing portfolio supply, acquisition prices and local recovery capabilities alongside headline NPL volumes.
